New Delhi: East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has decided to upgrade teachers’ skills by sending them to foreign universities for training.
Corporation schools that have a relatively poor reputation regarding the education quality hope that the teachers will acquire new learning styles and that will help bridge the teaching gaps.
“We will be sending our teachers to foreign universities to study in teacher training-related programmes. EDMC will sponsor their entire education,” EDMC commissioner Vikas Anand was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
Sending government staff like civil servants for foreign training has been a practice since 2001. Delhi government has also sent teachers to foreign universities to gain international exposure.
EDMC will bear the expenses of two teachers for training at a reputed foreign university in the first year under the scheme. There are around 5,000 teachers in corporation schools, which include principals.
Only regular teachers employed at corporation schools for over 10 years with impeccable professional record and is not more than 42-years-old are eligible for the sponsorship.
The teachers will be given admissions in the top 100 institutes according to the Times Higher Education World University rankings published. They are allowed to take up subjects like public education, special education, developments in education and the use of digital technology in education, reported TOI.
With the maximum time allowed for a course is three years, teachers need to send performance reports to the corporation for further funding.
