UGC Forms Academic Bank Of Credits Enabling Students To Tailor Their Own Courses

New Delhi: Students can now learn subjects of their choice from multiple colleges and varsities at the same time to suit their aptitude and quest for knowledge. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has formed norms for the establishment of an Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) that would help the students to do so. The step is in keeping with implementing a key suggestion in the National Education Policy (NEP).

The regulations called the University Grants Commission (Establishment and Operation of Academic Banks of Credits in High Education) Regulations, 2021 were notified in the gazette on Wednesday.

There will be an appropriate credit transfer mechanism to facilitate students to choose their own learning path to attain a Degree or Diploma or Post Graduate diploma or academic qualification.

How it will work?

The Academic Bank of Credits will provide significant autonomy to students by providing an extensive choice of courses for a programme of study, flexibility in curriculum, novel and engaging course options across a number of higher education disciplines or institutions.

The move will also allow students to tailor their degrees or make specific modifications or specialisations rather than undergoing the rigid, regularly prescribed degree or courses of a single university or autonomous college.
