UGC Mulls Common Entrance Test For All Central Universities

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) is toying with the idea of holding a Common Entrance Test (CET) for undergraduate admissions for all central universities from the next academic year.

The higher education regulatory body is mulling doing away with unrealistic cut-off marks for admission to universities.

Headed by Central University of Punjab vice-chancellor, RP Tiwari, the UGC has constituted a seven-member panel. The committee is formed “to consider the issue (of) holding common entrance tests at the undergraduate level only from the next academic year in central universities to provide a single platform for admission”.

The Union Ministry of Education runs as many as 40 varsities in India with a collective seat count of 1 to 1.25 lakh in different disciplines at the undergraduate level. Of these, about 16 central universities have a common entrance test for bachelor’s courses currently.
