London: The United Kingdom government’s offer to students from Afghanistan to study here has been revoked as of now. The Afghan students have now been told that they will not be able to take up their places.
The Afghans were under the Chevening Scholarships which enable promising students from across the world to pursue a master’s degree in the UK, reported BBC.
According to the UK Foreign Office, the British Embassy there would not finish preparations in time for this year given the situation in Afghanistan.
However, the decision didn’t go down well with the political fraternity with two former Conservative cabinet ministers criticising the move.
Scholarship student, Naimatullah Zafary, told the BBC that students had been crying and some had panic attacks when they met with UK embassy staff to discuss the deferral of their places.
“I cannot sleep, when we really need it, you are taking it away,” Zafary was quoted as saying by the publication.
Going by Zafary’s version, there are 35 Afghans who have been affected with half of them being women.
The development comes after the Taliban terrorists took over the country and the presidential palace in Kabul. This happened following the withdrawal of the US and other foreign troops after 20 years of military operations.
Deeply disappointing to hear – on top of everything – that Afghans who received Scholarships from the UK government to study in the UK this year have now been told they will not be granted visas due to “administration issues”. Surely someone can sort this out? pic.twitter.com/5Z5dgqLKJC
