Bhubaneswar: The Higher Education Department accorded the unitary university status to Khallikote Autonomous College in Berhampur on Sunday.
This follows an announcement Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had made in this regard three months ago.
Principal Secretary (Higher Education) Saswat Mishra said the status will enable the merger of Khallikote University (set up in 2015) with Berhampur University.
Following the merger, regular teaching and non-teaching employees of Khallikote University will be absorbed in Berhampur University. As for the students, they will continue their classes under the banner of Berhampur University.
Earlier in February 2020, the Higher Education Department had notified the change in status of Khallikote University from being a cluster university to a unitary university.
The department also disaffiliated the university’s five constituent colleges, including Khallikote Autonomous College (the lead college), and reaffiliated those with Berhampur University with effect from June 1, 2020.
