Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Udaipur has announced the implementation of the 10 per cent quota for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) from the 2020-21 academic session.
IIM Udaipur’s announcement, as reported by news agency IANS, comes even as a host of other IIMs, especially the older ones are still undecided about how to implement it without compromising on the teacher-student ratio.
“We have already implemented 5 per cent quota in 2019-20 session. However, as the announcement came a little late when we have had already started with admissions, we have decided to start the 10 per cent EWS quota from the coming academic session of 2020-21,” said Pankaj Patel, chairman, IIM Udaipur while speaking to IANS.
The Narendra Modi had earlier this year passed an Act in Parliament reserving 10 per cent EWS quota for government jobs and in higher educational institutes. The deadline set is 2020.
According to the IIMs, the move will necessitate admitting 25 per cent more students. A larger intake could throw faculty-student raio out of the kilter and strain infrastructure, an Economic Times report had said last week, highlighting the IIMs concerns.
It said that while IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Lucknow are yet to admit candidates under the EWS quota, other IIMs are still undecided about how to go about it.
The report also said the institutes will not be implementing the quota from the ongoing academic session due to infrastructural constraints.
