IIT Kharagpur Develops ‘Do It Yourself’ Lab To Create Young Innovators
IIT Kharagpur has hit upon a unique idea to inculcate the spirit of innovation among the freshers.
It will open the doors to a ‘Do It Yourself’ lab where students can work on projects conceived by them.
The lab will be a veritable playground for technical ideas where instruments and consumables will be at the disposal for the first-year students. There will be fixed slots for them and some open slots will be available where anyone can walk in and work, a statement said.
“The students will be working towards independent product innovations. They will have access to facilities and multidisciplinary guidance and technical assistance to reach their goals,” Associate Professor at IIT Kharagpur’s Department of Mechanical Engineering Vikranth Racherla said.
Initially, the lab will support the students of electrical, mechanical and electronics engineering disciplines. In the coming years, students from more departments can work in the lab.
They will be supported by the technical staff, selected faculty members and senior students as well in developing and bringing their ideas to fruition, the statement said.
Recently, the Centre has unveiled the ‘National Innovation and Start-up policy’ to encourage students across disciplines to develop and incubate ideas on campus during their academic years.
The policy encourages students to take up a semester break or a year break to work on their start-ups. The institutes will ensure they sit for the exams even if they are low on attendance.
