Bhubaneswar: City-based Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) and Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) have introduced chess in the curriculum. KISS and KIIT will be the first academic institutions in the country to offer chess as regular courses.
According to KIIT and KISS founder Achyuta Samanta, the initiative will help several chess players to get international exposure. “Students will benefit immensely from this programme. We will see many tribal students become chess players in future. Besides, this game will help students in their mental growth,” Samanta was quoted as saying by ABP Education.
According to the International Chess Federations’ (FIDE) policy, chess should be included in school level curriculum and has already been implemented in several countries.
The International Chess Federation will manage the chess programme at KIIT and KISS, while the institutes will provide the necessary infrastructure.
“As a leading promoter of the game, Achyuta Samanta gave the green light to AICF for starting this programme. Subsequently, all arrangements have been made to include Chess in the study curriculum of KISS from the 2021-22 academic session,” according to a release issued by the KIIT and KISS. KIIT and KISS have been promoting chess for more than a decade.
