Record Number Of J&K Students Avail PM Scholarship In 2019

New Delhi: About 4,500 students from Jammu and trouble-torn Kashmir valley have secured admissions in different colleges across the country for the undergraduate programmes under the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS), the highest in six years.

Indian Express in a report said that close to 2400 students are from the Jammu region,1474 from Kashmir and the remaining are from the Ladakh region.

Last year, approximately 2500 students had taken admission under the PMSSS and 3000 in the year before that.

The Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme was launched in 2011-12. Under this scheme, 5000 scholarships are offered to the students to pursue undergraduate studies in the fields of engineering, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, hotel management, agriculture, architecture and commerce. The scholarship takes care of their tuition, boarding, books and other essential fees.

This year the 4500 J&K students have taken admissions in colleges in different states like Maharashtra, Delhi, Punjab, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. Out of the total students, 2690 have joined engineering courses; 800 have taken up general courses including BA(Bachelor of Arts); 700 have secured admission in the nursing programmes and rest 150 students have opted for pharmacy courses.
