The National Medical College Kolkata (NMC Kolkata), taking cognizance of the social factors that students often have to deal with, after one of it’s first year nursing student committed suicide, has set-up a four-member panel to study ‘lifestyle’ issues faced by students, especially those hailing from rural areas.
Sampati, a first nursing student committed suicide by hanging herself in her hostel room on November 16, 2019. A suicide note found in her hostel room hinted that she was depressed because she was unable understand her lectures which were in English, being more comfortable in Bangla. According to reports, the not e also suggests that Sampati was worried about a Rs 5 lakh loan that her father has taken for her higher studies.
“This is serious issue. Someone took such an extreme step because of their lifestyle, language and family background. To prevent any further incidents, the college has decided to establish this committee to understand the root cause of the problem,” said a senior professor of the Nursing Department, NMC Kolkata.
The college has started one-on-one interactions with the students, as well as their friends, family and teachers in order to understand the challenges they face while attending the lectures, added the professor.
The NMC has also roped in some of the well-known psychologists in the city to counsel students, to help them overcome their inferiority complex, along with their mental issues, reports News 18.
It was learnt that Sampati went to her home in Bankura district during the Durga Puja holidays. There she told her father that she doesn’t want to continue her Nursing studies. But her father, a house painter by profession, convinced her to continue her studies as the Nursing course will help her in future.
