Thrissur BTech Student Designs ‘Masks With Mics’

Thrissur: Wearing a mask in working mode has proven to be a difficult task during the COVID-19 pandemic. To get rid of the difficulty, a first-year BTech student Kevin Jacob from Thrissur Government Engineering College has developed an innovative solution by designing a mask with a mic and a speaker attached to it.

Son of two doctors, Jacob said that he came up with the solution after he saw his parents’ difficulties while interacting with their patients.

“My parents are doctors and since the beginning of the pandemic, they have been struggling to communicate with their patients. They found it very difficult to make themselves clear through multiple layers of masks and a face shield. This was when this idea came to my mind,” Jacob was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

The engineering student tested the first prototype with his parents — Dr Senoj KC and Dr Jyoti Mary Jose. He started producing more such masks as demand soared.

With a 30-minute charge, the gadget can be used continuously for four to six hours. It is fixed with the mask with the use of a magnet.

“Doctors who have given feedback have said that they don’t have to strain to be heard and they were able to communicate with their patients effortlessly. Overall the feedback from users has been positive,” Jacob said.
