Agartala: A Buddhist university will be established in Manu Bankul, Sabroom, in Tripura.

Tripura’s director of higher education, Nripendra Chandra Sharma, has shot a Letter of Intent to the Bahujana Hitaya Education Trust for establishing the university.

A Tripura-based publicly charitable organisation, Bahujana Hitaya Education Trust, will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to build necessary infrastructure at the proposed site.

Students from across 31 countries will get to study and research Buddhist literature, culture and tradition at the proposed university. The state government is also contemplating establishing medical, technical and general degree colleges at the university.

The government is about to bring a bill in the Tripura Assembly for setting up the university once the infrastructure is ready.

Currently, Tripura has three universities. Tripura University, which is a central university, the state-run MBB University and privately-owned ICFAI University.

As many as 22 colleges are operating in Tripura under these varsities.

The university aims to attract students from South East Asian countries like Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Sri Lanka.
