Allahabad University Council Rejects Name Change Proposal
Allahabad: The executive council of Allahabad University has turned down a proposal to change the varsity’s name to Prayagraj University.
Earlier, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has proposed the name change.
Following this, the council members discussed the issue over emails due to their inability to meet amid the nationwide lockdown.
“Three members did not respond, while the remaining 12 responded in the negative and a resolution has been passed against changing the name,” council member Shailendra Mishra told PTI on Monday.
Meanwhile, about 4,000 people including students and teachers signed an online petition against the renaming of the university.
In 2018, the Uttar Pradesh government had renamed Allahabad to Prayagraj.
